Today, the world celebrates World Whale and Dolphin Day. This holiday was established in 1986 when the International Whaling Commission (IWC), after 200 years of relentless extermination, imposed a ban on whaling. The ban is still in effect today, meaning that hunting whales and trading whale meat is prohibited worldwide.

On July 25, 1853, the Minsk Provincial government and the Minsk City Duma, having considered the issue of "Creating a fire department in Minsk," approved the cost estimate for the maintenance of a fire department consisting of 51 people. It is from this moment that the history of the professional fire service of Belarus begins, and July 25 is considered the day of its foundation.

The holiday in honor of one of the key milestones in the history of Rus — the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion in 988 — was established not long ago. On June 1, 2010, President Dmitry Medvedev approved amendments to the Federal Law "On Days of Military Glory and Commemorative Dates of Russia." The Day of the Baptism of Rus was added to the list of commemorative dates. The Russian Orthodox Church proposed to grant this historical event state status.
International Day of Friendship is one of the youngest holidays in the calendar. The decision to celebrate it was made by the United Nations General Assembly on April 27, 2011, during its 65th session. The ideological foundation for this new date was the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (which covered the years 2001–2010).
